Client: American Museum of Natural History

Industry: CULTURE

Project Type: PRINT

Client Profile: The museum, founded in 1869, hosts 5 million visitors a year to exhibit from its world-renowned collection. The museum has major research programs, one of largest natural history libraries in the western hemisphere, and significant educational programs.

Design Challenge: The Museum needed an attention-grabbing opening night invitation to attract twenty-somethings to the opening night of "Sonic Vision," a digitally-animated alternative music show produced in collaboration with MTV2. The invitation needed to visually convey the energy and feeling of the music, with tracks mixed by Moby. It also had to reach a target demographic not usually associated with the museum.

Aaron Design Inc. Solution: The invitation superimposed the names of the bands on visuals from the show, using a very contemporary color scheme. A translucent envelope through which names like Radiohead, Moby, U2, David Bowie, Coldplay, Queens of the Stone Age, and Fischerspooner could be seen, enticed recipients to look inside.

Benefits to Client: The opening party was a huge success. Thousands attended, and the museum had to add extra screenings of the show.
